The parents of my paternal grandmother Betty Latteri were both named Latteri. I have traced these Latteri lines each back three generations, but could not get further, and have as yet found no relationship between them. Other Latteri families are connected to me in unknown ways through DNA.
Innocenzo Latteri (say 1760 – bef 1825) was my 4th-great-grandfather and the male-line ancestor of my grandmother. I have only found his name on records of his children. His wife was Benedetta Rotella (1765 – 1846-09-22⟮1⟯Portale Antenati), daughter of Sebastiano Rotella and Angela Carroccio. They had these known children, all born, married, and died in San Fratello when recorded:
He is reported as “fu” (late) on Salvatore‘s marriage record in 1825.⟮12⟯Portale Antenati Furthermore, I searched records available back to 1820 without finding his death.
Benedetto Latteri (1775⟮13⟯Benedetto is said to be aged 45 at the birth of Maria, 47 of Grazia, and 46 of Cirino. The latter is the odd one out, while the others suggest a birth in probably 1775. – 1840×6) was my 4th-great-grandfather and the male-line great-grandfather of my grandmother’s mother. Again, he is only known through his children’s vital records. His wife was Rosa Cracò (1779 – 1854-05-25), daughter of Pietro Cracò and Paola Parafioriti. They had these known children:
There is a Francesco Latteri died aged 50 on 1865-05-19 whose parents are given as Benedetto Latteri and Rosa Latteri⟮23⟯Portale Antenati, perhaps representing ignorance of his mother’s surname. This could be of this family, but could also be of Benedetto Latteri and Rosa Rausa, who were having children around roughly the same time.
Benedetto is reported as deceased on his son Cirino’s marriage record in 1846, but not on his daughter Benedetta’s in 1840. I searched San Fratello death records for the intervening years but failed to find Benedetto’s. There are others of the same name who died, but they seem to clearly be different people.
I have a DNA match to someone with the surname Latteri who had Y chromosome tested to be in haplogroup T-M70. If I could connect his Latteri line to one of mine, I would know the hapologroup of at least one of these Latteri families (and possibly both if they can be shown related).
However, I was only able to trace him back 5 generations to an F. Saverio Latteri. The F is almost certainly short for Francesco, since a grandson’s name was spelled out as such. No relation between F. Saverio and the other families has been discovered.
I have another DNA match to someone whose male line goes back to Vincenzo Latteri who married Rosa Ragusa, but I have not been able to trace further. His haplogroup is T-CTS8862, which is a subgroup of the above. It seems likely that the previous match is in the same group and was simply not tested as deeply, but it is also possible that they are not related and are in different groupings.
It remains open whether a record can be found pushing any of these lines further, or showing whether some or all are related through a common Latteri ancestor. The surname has been around for many centuries, and so we can’t count on them converging within documented timeframes.
Based on the above, it seems likely that at least one and possibly both of my Latteri lines belongs to haplogroup T.
