Sidnah Leuty

Sidnah Ann (née Leuty) (Gillespie) Ladd (1818-10-06 – 1879-11-17) was my great-great-great-grandmother, being the wife of James Frank Ladd, her second husband, and with him the mother of Hannah Ladd, wife of Joel McPherson. Her name was sometimes written Sidney (such as in the 1870 census), of which it may be a variant. She was born in Rhea County, Tennessee, later moving to Washington state with her second husband. She was the daughter of William Stanton Leuty and Mary Roddye.

First marriage

She first married William Neilson Gillespie (1803-07-28 – 1840-10-16) in Rhea County on 1834-04-03. They had two known children:

  • George Lewis (1836-08-07 – 1923-02-21), married Lucinda Victoria Brown.
  • William Stanton L. (* 1838), seems to have moved to Texas but I cannot find any more. The L is almost certainly short for Leuty.

William’s brother Robert Neilson Gillespie married Sidnah’s sister Hannah. They also had a son William Stanton Gillespie, with who his double cousin William above is sometimes confused.

Remarriage

She married secondly to James Frank Ladd on 1846-10-15, about six years after her husband’s death; see his article for their children.

Sidnah died in 1879, so that James survived her by more than 20 years.
