The parents of my paternal grandmother Betty Latteri were both named Latteri. I have traced these Latteri lines each back three generations, but could not get further, and have as yet found no relationship between them.
Innocenzo was my 4th-great-grandfather and the male-line ancestor of my grandmother. I have only found his name on records of his children.
His son Salvatore, my great-great-great-grandfather, was born around 1798 as computed from his reported ages, so Innocenzo was presumably still alive around then. He is reported as “fu” (late) on Salvatore‘s marriage record in 1825.
His wife was Benedetta Rotella (1765 – 1846-09-22), daughter of Sebastiano Rotella and Angela Carroccio.
Benedetto was my 4th-great-grandfather and the male-line great-grandfather of my grandmother’s mother. Again, he is only known through his children’s vital records.
He is reported as alive for his daughter Benedetta’s marriage in 1840, but not for his son Cirino’s in 1846. San Fratello death records for the intervening years have been searched but I failed to find Benedetto. There are others of the same name who died, but they seem to clearly be different people.
His son Salvatore was my great-great-great-grandfather (and not the Salvatore above; again, names are reused often).
The aforementioned Cirino is an ancestor of actor Al Pacino, making him my fourth cousin, once removed.
Benedetto’s wife was Rosa Cracò (1799 – 1854-05-25), daughter of Pietro Cracò and Paola Parafioriti.
I have a DNA match to someone with the surname Latteri who had Y chromosome tested to be in haplogroup T-M70. If I could connect his Latteri line to one of mine, I would know the hapologroup of at least one of these Latteri families (and possibly both if they can be shown related). Otherwise, it’s only conjecture.
However, I was only able to trace him back 5 generations to an F. Saverio Latteri. The F is almost certainly short for Francesco, since a grandson’s name was spelled out as such. No relation between F. Saverio and the other families has been discovered.
It remains open whether a record can be found pushing any of these lines further, or showing whether they are all related through a common Latteri ancestor. The surname has been around for many centuries, and so we can’t count on them converging within documented timeframes.
