John Hill (1701-01-15 – 1739) and Mary Wormall (also Wormwall; 1704-05-01 – 1786-08-06) were my 6th-great-grandparents, being the parents of William Hill. They married in Boston on 1725-05-29⟮1⟯FamilySearch, where Mary was born⟮2⟯FamilySearch.
John’s parents remain unidentified, and a birth record has not been found. A genealogist claimed that “family records” have his birth as “Jan. 15, 1700”⟮3⟯FamilySearch, with no information as to whether this is 1699/1700 or 1700/1; I am guessing the latter. John is referred to as “Capt. John” in his wife’s death record.
Mary was the daughter of William Wormall and Sarah Ballard; see discussion there for the surname variants.
The following seven children are recorded born in Boston to John and Mary Hill:
I have done limited research on these.
There is an outside chance of a different couple John and Mary Hill parents of one of these, but it is very unlikely. The less than 11-month gap between the twins and William is a little surprising but not implausible.
On 1739-08-14, Mary widow of John Hill of Boston died intestate was made administrator of his estate.⟮10⟯FamilySearch John presumably died not long before then.
The will of widow Mary Hill of Boston dated 1779-11-02 left “my own property exclusive of my late Husband’s estate” entirely to her daughter Jane “[i]n consideration of her taking the care of me in my advanced age”.⟮11⟯FamilySearch Mary does not name her husband nor any other family member, which might leave doubt as to whether it is the same Mary Hill with daughter Jane. However, the inventory of her estate, taken 1787-11-16⟮12⟯FamilySearch by Jane Hill, has many items also found in the estate of John. For instance, Mary’s inventory had a “black walnut desk”, a “round black walnut desk”, and a “tea chest”, while John had a “black walnut scrutore”, ”black walnut oval table”, and a “mahogany tea table”; Mary’s will mentions “one mahogany table”. Mary’s will was probated 1787-11-14. Thus the recorded Boston death on 1786-08-06 of a Mary Hill⟮13⟯Ancestry$/Lib, wife of Capt. John, is surely her.
