George Ryder

George Emerson Ryder (1876-10-26 – 1927-04-12) was my patrilineal great-grandfather. He married Mary Fleming on 1901-02-26 and had twelve children by her, although two daughters (Alice and Iola) died aged 2 months. He was the son of William and Mary Ryder. His sixth child and third son, Fred Ryder, was my grandfather.

He was born in Whiting, Vermont; died in Middlebury at age 50; and is buried in Brandon.

I am his only surviving male male-line descendant.

Children

These were all by Mary Fleming.

  • Minnie Irene (1902-02-14 – 1988-05-10), married 1st Edward Sylenas Chandler, divorced, 2nd Leon Edgar Taylor, divorced, 3rd Richard Williams Henningrefref. She may have had a marriage between the last two but probably not.
  • George Emerson (1904-02-12 – 1976-02-05), married 1st Isabella May Smith, divorced, 2nd Audrey E. McAllen, divorced, 3rd widow Jaskia (née Stone) LaRock.
  • Alice (1905-05-25 – 1905-07-28), found dead in her bed aged two months.
  • Emma Mae (1906-10-28 – 1992-09-03), married Richard John Swenor.
  • Royce Arnold (1908-07-05 – 1985-03-15), married Ruth Ellen Carr, with no children.
  • Frederick Archie (1910-01-17 – 1956-10-13), my grandfather.
  • Iola (1911-04-26 – 1911-07-04), died aged 2 months.

  • Dorothy Mae (1912-09-09 – 1993-07-24), married 1st Howard E. Nicklaw, divorced, 2nd Louis Allen Reed.
  • Kenneth Clifton (1914-03-25 – 1937-12-01), never married, but had an illegitimate daughter Cynthia Ann Badger (1938-08-20 – 2012-12-24) conceived weeks before his death.
  • Irene Grace (1915-11-02 – 1948-03-16), married 1st Edward William Forest, divorced, 2nd Wilson Woodrow Jones.
  • Bernice Blanche (1918-06-20 – 2015-09-15), married George Leonard LaPorte.
  • Elizabeth Freda (1920-03-13 – 1973-03-15), married Raymond Joseph Forrest.

Obituary

George E. Ryder, age 51 of Leicester, died at the Porter hospital in Middlebury Tuesday morning. The remains were removed to his home on the Lake Dunmore road. He was born in Whiting, son of William Henry Harrison and Jane (Elliot) Ryder, and is survived by his wife, six daughters and four sons, Mrs. Edward S. Chandler, Brandon; Mrs. George Hall, Salisbury; George, jr., Royce, Fred, Dorothy, Kenneth, Irene, Bernice and Elizabeth of Leicester, also by four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Eva Clark of Middlebury; Mrs. Jennie Myatt, Boston; Mrs. Charles Wetmore, Brandon; Mrs. Samuel Robbins, Washington, Me.; Herbert Ryder of Leicester, and William Ryder of Forest Dale. Funeral services will be held at the house Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev E. M. Weller, rector of St. Thomas’ Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery, Brandon, with A. V. Freer in charge. 

The obituary says 51, but he was actually 50.
