Edmund Freeman (β 1596-07-25 – 1682) was an assistant governor of Plymouth Colony and my double ancestor, being my 10th-great-grandfather through his son John and 11th-great-grandfather through his daughter Elizabeth, although the former has some uncertainty. This makes my great-grandparents George Ryder and Mary Fleming 8th cousins, once removed. He immigrated to America on the Abigail in 1635.
Edmund was the daughter of Edmund Freeman (✝ 1623) and Alice Coles (✝ 1652); no other ancestors of his are known. He married Bennett Hodsoll (β 1596-08-23 – ⊥ 1630-04-12) on 1617-06-16 in Cowfold, England. She died in Pulborough, England, and Edmund remarried to Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) on 1632-08-10 in Shipley, England.
His will is dated 1682-06-21, and it was probated 1682-11-02, so he died between those dates.
Edmund's wife can be traced to one great-grandparent:
Edmund’s mother is often given a false ancestry starting with her parents being George Coles and Alice Sargent, which gives a descent from prominent medieval families. However, this is not just unproven, but chronologically impossible, since George and Alice married in 1597, after even Edmund, their supposed grandson, was born.
Alice is however known to have had a brother named George.
The Freeman Y-DNA haplogroup has been confirmed as E-M81. Statistical analysis suggests it is very likely E-Z5009 and perhaps its subclade E-BY9753.ref
